Umarell is an Italian restaurant located in the historic Dicksonska Palatset in Gothenburg, created by Louise Johansson and Oliver Ingrosso. The name, which refers to an elderly man curiously observing a construction site, is a playful nod to all those who have followed the palace’s renovation. In its grand dining rooms and bar, authentic Italian cuisine is served where simplicity meets finesse. A place for both spontaneous dinners and grand celebrations, always with a warm atmosphere and classic flavors.
The Dicksonska Palatset was originally built as a private residence for Oscar Dickson and his family, designed by the British architect William Allen Boulnois. Completed in 1862, it is located between the Garden Society of Gothenburg and Heden, just steps away from Avenyn. Over a century after its construction, the City of Gothenburg purchased the Dicksonska Palatset, but despite this, the building has not been open to the public. In recent years, the palace has undergone extensive renovations and has been carefully restored to its original form. In addition to Umarell, with its adjoining cocktail and wine bar, the premises will also house the chess club Svarta Hästen, a wine cellar, and spaces for events and meetings.
Louise Johansson won the very first season of Sweden’s MasterChef in 2011. Since then, she has worked as a chef at acclaimed restaurants such as Upper House, vRÅ, and Salt & Sill. She was a finalist in Chef of the Year in both 2019 and 2021, and went on to win Chef’s Challenge in 2022. With Umarell, Louise opens her first own restaurant – shaped by her cooking philosophy rooted in the west coast of Sweden, inspired by the sea, vegetables, and seasonal ingredients.
Since 2022, Oliver Ingrosso has owned and operated the Italian restaurant Olli in Stockholm, and has recently opened Ollis Deli. In 2024, he launched the food brand Mino together with his siblings. Born and raised in the world of Italian cuisine, Oliver brings an immense passion for authentic Italian cooking to everything he does.
